Kalita Wave - Packaging Reboot

THE TEST:

For a decade, Kalita Wave has been a leading resource in the specialty coffee industry. The design of this brewing vessel, with the constantly evolving culture of the cafe, remains a barista favorite. From brewing consistency to a beautiful metallic shine, within the box it is nothing short of timeless. The issue that I came across was the way that Kalita displayed their product. Not only was it inefficient and did no justice to the design, the display was unsustainable with plastic bags of filters being sold separately and a cardboard box with an outdated photograph of the product with Japanese type surrounding it.

THE SOLUTION:

In an effort to simplify the design, I also wanted to let the product shine by allowing the buyer to see the brewing device before they buy it to fully show off its features. The Kalita Wave is known to be the best introductory brewer on the market, so with this in mind, I added small graphics and type to the bottom of the box to guide a new home brewer in preparing their first Kalita Wave pour-over. The brewer is locked into a cutout that sits on the top of the box with a band that wraps over the top to prevent from falling out. Within the box is a pack of filters to go with your brewer; eliminating the plastic and allowing you to buy everything you need all at once. My solution not only serves as a pedestal for the brewer, but it also allows for more sustainability; something the third wave coffee movement values greatly.
