It is a 140-page hardcover photo book containing 200 images captured between May 2022 to August 2022 on a Leica M2 that my grandfather George bought in the early 1950’s. He saved up all the money he could working summer jobs as a high school student to buy this camera.
The project began in June 2022 while undergoing a number of changes in my life — resulting in a period of depression I had yet to experience before. I began searching for anything that could revive my joy and help me through a very difficult period. It was at this time when I found my grandfather’s old Leica M2. That is when I began to see things through a different lens.
I had no idea if this camera worked as George used it throughout the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s but it has sat unused for an extended amount of time. I thought this could be an opportunity so I started shooting with it and came up with the idea for a summer project to thank George for encouraging my life in photography over a decade ago.
George Hatzfeld, my grandfather, found a love for photography as a teenager in rural Missouri before being sent to Japan to serve as a photographer for the U.S. military. On the weekends, he would take a scooter through rural Tokyo photographing with the Leica M2 that I shot this entire project with.
George has traveled much of the world donating medical equipment to third world countries with ProjectCure for close to three decades. He is a brilliant photographer and gifted me the opportunity to use photography to see my world in a better light.
